The folding wheel Wheelchair is the brainchild of Duncan Fitzsimons of Vitamin Design in London. Recently nominated for a design council award, the folding wheel wheelchair is designed to make travelling easier.

The ability to fold a wheelchair and add it to your carry-on luggage on an aircraft could mean the end to damage caused by over-zealous baggage handlers and they plan to make the wheels available for your existing chair.

Although the wheelchair is not yet in production the wheels and chair designs have been purchased by American independent living equipment retailer and manufacturer Maddak. The wheels and chair are due to launch in March this year.

This would be particularly awesome if something like the Alber E-Motion electric conversion system could be incorporated as well for powerchair users. I'd wannaone!

Maybe if the motor hubs were separate - so that the wheels could still be unclipped and folded as  shown, either leaving the motor hubs attached to the frame or to be unclipped separately for storage/transit.

I would love to talk to the designer about this possibility.

Hi George, I think Duncan would be very open to discussion as he involved people at every stage of the design, he opened up the process to people with a really in depth survey. His contact details are on the Vitamin design website and there is a link in the main post.

Kind regards

Colin
