New Spotlight on Design at Mobility Roadshow 2013

Your chance to influence the look and functionality of future mobility products

27 to 29 June at Telford International Centre

The design of products to aid mobility has vastly progressed since those exhibited at the first Mobility Roadshow in 1983, but people with disabilities still feel they are being left behind in the design and functionality of many inclusive products.

A new feature in the Design Zone at this year’s 30th anniversary event is Spotlight on Design, showcasing product ideas, concepts and new inventions; from crutches with wheels designed to transfer the pressure of using crutches evenly and gently through the upper body; to ideas for wheelchair snow shovels and an ingenious aid memoire to remind people with dementia of the time and day.

The popular Cool Wall returns where visitors vote on their most loved and hated products and the University of Bath will be showing its If Only it Worked app, inviting people with usability issues around the home to talk about the problems they face.

Visitors can also view the results of the Enabled by Design-athon, a two-day ideas and product prototyping-fest for the 21st century where teams designed and built prototypes that demonstrate how products can be designed and constructed rapidly with people for people, personalising products to better fit with their lives and needs.

The Future Perfect Company and the University of Brighton will the showcasing the winners and finalists of this year’s Designing for the Future competition that encouraged student designers to think about the challenges and issues affecting our ageing population.

“Each year we introduce new elements that encourage the exchange of ideas between designers, innovators, entrepreneurs and importantly, end users,” said Jacqui Jones, Chief Executive of Mobility Choice, the organisation behind the Mobility Roadshow. “The Design Zone has become a vibrant platform to capture the real needs and desires of those less able, giving them the opportunity to influence design of future inclusive products and services.”

For the third year the Mobility Roadshow Design Zone is curated by Enabled by Design and Such and Such Design and is sponsored by Autoadapt.
