Sensor System Should Stop Stolen Spaces
Ever driven up to a shopping centre, supermarket, or other public car park, steered your car towards the disabled parking spaces only to find that some extremely inconsiderate, non-permit holder has illegally parked there? Frustrating right? Well this could now be a thing of the past!
Car Parking Technologies from New Zealand have invented a fantastic new parking system that could end accessible parking abuse for good. The system works by an electronic tag being fitted directly to a permit holder’s car which is in turn read by a sensor at the car park. A wireless relay system links the information back to the company who verifies whether they are a genuine disabled driver or not. If not, enforcement are immediately alerted which could results in some hefty fines, clamping, or towing – a pretty decent deterrent if you ask me!
The system has already been successfully used in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the UK, so it could be coming to a car park near you in the future – watch those spaces!

The pessimist in me thinks that, while this would certainly stop some abuse, it will also probably lead to a rise in other forms of badge abuse including badge theft and forgery. Expect also to see more cars parked in badge spaces with a (legitimate badge-holding) person sitting in the passenger seat for long periods while the (non-disabled) driver completes their shopping.
