My Nana is losing her sight but loves to read - Can you help?

Hi Everyone.

My fiercely independent Nana (who is now 83) is slowly losing her sight. She used to love crosswords, knitting, and most of all reading to pass her time but now can't do this. We thought of audio-books as a great alternative but most of these are now online (not ideal as she is not computer literate) or as MP3's for mobile devices. We have managed to get a few books on cassette tape from the local libraries for her which works quite well as she can simply push the stop, pause and play buttons (which have been kitted out with different Velcro dots for each function so she can feel the difference) but still not ideal. We were wondering if there was a solution that someone knew of to enable her to get access to a wider range of books but without having to be too tech-savvy so she can still operate it herself. Does anyone know of any products or modification devices that could help her out?

Thanks!

Hi Margie,

I have an elderly relative who is severely visually impaired and she uses the RNIB Audio Book Service. They deliver the books (in CD format) directly to her door.

The annual subscription includes an audio book player and unlimited access to their huge collection of titles.

The lady in question is very pleased with the service and despite being in her late 90s now she seems to have no problem operating the player.

Great stuff Alex! I'll check it out :-)
