techie, nerd, what ever I love gadgets, gadgetry, computers, gaming (real gaming, not the stupid casinos on-line garbage).

What I do not like is that I cannot find, not even with my contacts, a vertical mouse that is ready for serious gaming.

Right now I am testing out the Evoluent vertical mouse, which is technically your just above basic mouse for all those others who only play with their computers and use Word, e-mail, surf on-line that sort of thing. I think using this, but also tweaking it to add an on the fly DPS management, optional weights to adjust the weight of the mouse (like the Steel Series, Madcatz etc).

Been mulling this over, while playing Everquest II, War Thunder, and other MMO type games as well, with both a traditional gaming mouse then the Evoluent vertical, and trying to come up with some solution between them. It shouldn't be difficult.

What other options should it have?

Hi Catherine.

You might like to check out www.oneswitch.org.uk who do some interesting stuff with regard modifying gaming controllers. Also, the charity Special Effect www.specialeffect.org.uk have also done a lot of work to make gaming accessible.

Okay another words someone out there is already doing this so don't worry?

Was trying to say I want to come up with my own, and with the contacts in the industry (having worked in the MMO genre of computer games for too many years) I was thinking of bringing something to the big guys to get them to see that there is a market here. Not just the severely disabled, who do have those orgs you mention, but people who may have only slight upper body troubles, or even as "mundane" as having Carpel tunnel who also need a better solution.

Interesting project and I agree there's most probably a good market out there. All the best of luck in finding a good solution.

Not a vertical mouse exactly, but what do think about wearable, gesture-controlled mouses like this one? Any potential for gaming...like a mini wii remote? To be honest my first thoughts are that gesture-controlled mouses would probably tire the arm out during long game sessions, unlike the standard mouse which is in a resting position (the Wii tires the arm but it's a casual gaming device in any case).

Thumb/finger controller like this one might offer a marginal advantage over the standard mouse in terms of smaller range of movement for the muscles, but could cause strain on the small muscles...also some users prefer bigger movements and more "meat" to their controller...and why not just use a gamepad anyway if you want thumb control?

...nonetheless, I think these finger controllers do have a value as mouse replacement where a touchscreen or space for a mousepad isn't available...

As regards the future of gaming controllers...we're used to the standard mouse-keyboard combination now (or the joypad inherited from the consoles), but I remember when FPSs were controlled by the keyboard just fine (when look up/down wasn't important to the gameplay), and many other genres didn't integrate the mouse either...of course the addition of the mouse improved the PC gaming experience all round, but in principal there's no reason why we might not find other solutions to suit individual needs/games!
