A while back we featured a short piece on the handSteady, a drinking aid which allows people with impaired upper mobility and tremors to drink independently. After contacting the company they were nice enough to send us one to see how a couple of the residents at our Broom Court care home in Stirling got on with using it. We went through to talk to them and see what they thought of it and how useful it was in aiding them to drink.

First we spoke to Murray who had been using the cup in place of a regular mug for a couple of weeks. Murray said that while he was used to being able to use a regular ceramic mug or cup, the handSteady did offer a better level of balance and the lid on top made it easier to use without spilling. He did state that he would like it if it came in a greater variety of colours and designs as he felt that the plain white mug which we’d given him looked too clinical. Murray also had an issue with the handSteady’s handle which is significantly larger than a normal mug’s and requires the users whole hand to hold it.

One of those who used it was not as pleased with the results, feeling that the handle was too awkward. She claimed that the plastic was too slippery and couldn’t be gripped properly like a normal mug, which she preferred. She also felt that she had got so used to drinking with a normal mug and the handSteady offered no advantage to her.

It is worth noting that those who tried the handSteady did not suffer from tremors or shaking, which was the main demographic intended for it. The main issue overall though seemed to be with the handle, which both users thought was too large and not as easy to hold as that of a regular mug.
