I had an idea and made it into an award winning reality.

I got diagnosed with ME about ten years ago.  My life changed beyond recogniton as a result.  I had been a teacher with a successful career and social life but all that changed as I found myself disabled and in need of a wheelchair and crutches on good days.

Frustrated at the lack of decent mobility aids, about three years ago I started customising my own and encouraged by the positive comments of others I started up GlamSticks and making designer crutches and walking sticks (and later white canes) to order.

GlamSticks went from strength to strength and were featured in the media and used by celebrities and on the catwalk in high profile fashion shows.  In 2011 GlamSticks won the UK Disabled Motoring Mobility Product of the Year award and in the same year was voted one of the top ten mobility products by PosAbility Magazine who still remain one of our greatest supporters.

I got too ill to manage GlamSticks and I have posted a video in the video section telling this story and I had to make the very difficult decision to sell the business.  I wanted to find the right person for the business, someone who reflected my ethos that GlamSticks was not just a business but a philosophy and a family and someone who would continue my charity work.  I found that person in Sharon Farley Mason and she is continuing where I left off and taking GlamSticks from strength to strength.

We came to a mutual decision that I would continue with GlamSticks in an advisory and marketing role and that is working out nicely.

It just goes to show, we can do anything.  I thought my world was at an end but I turned it completely around with an idea I had which I turned into a successful reality.  There are now other designer mobility aid businesses out there but I am proud to say that GlamSticks started the trend and made if possible for us all to look Glam whoever we are :)
