The RADAR key is getting a relaunch this year. Mostly because of the number of fake keys about. The details of the new key are secret so far but I wondered about the opportunities to make them easier to use?

The big keys are heavy and can be difficult to turn. A much better system would be some sort of almost ‘contactless’ electronic key fob. Or maybe a card like the oyster card. It is an oportunity to improve the current system and it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Hi,

There would be a frenzied backlash if every disabled person who owned a Radar key had to buy a different one as well.

Therefore we are all tstuck with the lock mechanism. This means that users often need a long key to insert past cladding, through the door and all the way into the lock. A shorter key would not work many of the locks.

There are two heads available -one with a normal size and shape and one with extended ears, depending on the needs of the user.

The new keys will be an improvement on the existing keys, with a better, 3 dimensional head, subtle machining improvements and Japanese levels of quality control in their manufacture (but still made in England).

Purpose built key cutting machinery and new manufacturing processes will make the new keys even more reliable and easy to turn, without affecting anybody who already owns one.
