Hi Pam,
I have been using crutches on and off since 11 years old and a nurse told me the first time to use Atrixo hand cream about 5 times a day. It really works. But don't use it just before you go to use the crutches or hands will be slippy. Your Mum should feel the difference in a day or two. I always use Atrixo as that was what I was advised but perhaps other hand creams would do - I'm not too sure.
I have only recently come across Oarsome Potential hand grips which were developed originally for rowers but ordered a pair that they have developed for crutches and find they make elbow crutch handles much more comfortable to use. You can get them on http://www.oarsome-potential.co.uk/mobility-range . Let me know how your Mum finds the Atrixo trick - I have never ever heard it from anyone else but have told loads of people. I really do think NHS staff should be trained to tell all patients using elbow crutches as it is a simple trick that works every time. The pain in your hands when first using crutches is something akin to having a large painful blister in the palms of both hands and makes weight bearing through your hands nigh impossible after a while. Atrixo hand cream will make all the difference and restore her hands to normal - I have never known it fail to work. After a few days she won't need the hand cream nearly as much. Best of luck.
Caroline, thought i would give you an update.
My mum is the proud owner of blue grips from oarsome. she finds it so much easier on her hand, so much so she hasn't presevered with the handcream. She also seems to be attracting a bit of attention and envy form some of her friends who haven't got the grips. fantastic recommendation.
I have just ordered a set for someone else who has just had a hip replacement and who will need ot use elbow crutches for a few months as he has other walking difficulties as well.
Finally (for now) - i have just sent a link to the site to someone else who uses elbow crutches who is gonig to give them a go as well.
so three happy people all thanks to you
