Do you have limited mobility or do you have a disability which prevents you from using a two-wheeled bicycle? bespoken came across a new specially adapted bike for people with disabilities which is available for hire for free from Aberdeen Beach Leisure Centre.
It is established that cycling is a wonderful sporting activity that keeps you fit. However, it is hard to take part in sporting activities as a family when you have a child, parent, or if you are caring for someone who is disabled. The dual bike provides a fantastic experience for the rider as well as for the person in the wheelchair, and is suitable for children and adults with any degree of disability.
As well as offering lots of fun and social contact, tandem cycling can be ideal for people with little or no limb movement, people with learning difficulties or people with complex needs. It is a great way to spend time outdoors as it is a friendly activity that allows wheelchair users to engage with sporting and physical activities.
Inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is hoped the initiative will encourage wheelchair users to get involved in cycling alongside their friends and family. The bicycle presents different gears, is well maintained and safe and also offers the use of a hoist if necessary. The seat at the front has detachable supports which mean that even very small children can feel comfortable and secure when using the bike. The dual bike is provided by various companies such as London Recumbents and Frank Mobility.
In order to hire the bike, you need to bring three forms of ID, and the use of cycling helmets is advised. If a hoist is required, hirers must be experienced in operating one for safety reasons, and will also have to bring their own slings. The leisure centre can provide additional straps or padding to ensure a safe, secure and comfy ride along the beach front. Although the hire is free you can leave a small donation that will go towards the maintenance of the bike.
Would you be interested in using the dual bike? Have you ever used one before? To hire the bike contact Aberdeen Beach Leisure Centre on 01224 655401 or for more information go on their website here.
