A Blackwood housing development in Fort William has become the first in a long term project to greatly boost the fuel efficiency of our properties across Scotland

Blackwood first planted its flag in Fort William in 1984 when 16 beautiful new properties sprang up in a quiet cul-de-sac called Lundy Gardens. Several of the properties were created specially to make them accessible to people who use wheelchairs and other mobility equipment, and this combined with the well-known charm of Fort William, made it one of the most desirable of Blackwood’s developments to live on.

In more recent years however, the wear and tear of time had begun to make itself felt and Lundy Gardens has just been on the receiving end of an Energy Savings Trust funded project that has restored to Lundy Gardens its original fresh and cheerful look, all the while boosting its energy efficiency much to the delight of the Blackwood tenants living there.

The new look is accompanied by the external wall insulation that has been installed which, combined with the state of the art quantum heaters that have been fitted inside the properties, is projected to help the tenants at Lundy Gardens make an important saving in their heating bills. Mr Gemmell, a resident of Lundy Gardens said to us regarding the development, “It looks great! Much smarter, the whole building is much smarter and to be honest I am beginning to feel that the new insulation is already having a positive effect.” And other residents at Lundy Gardens are in agreement, with Mr Anderson happily saying that the changes have “fairly brightened up the scheme”

Mrs Ryan is particularly appreciative of the aesthetic transformation of the street saying “now it looks a lot fresher”. And of the new heating and insulation that has been installed she remarked “It is warmer than it was and it will hopefully be less costly”.

The very successful transformation of Lundy Gardens is just the first step in a hugely important project with the vision of providing Blackwood’s tenants with beautiful and accessible homes that are also energy efficient. Head of Property at Blackwood, Wayne Kelly, said “The external wall insulation will improve the quality and efficiency of housing we provide for our tenants”. And combined with the quantum heaters, these new installations are projected to heat Blackwood homes much more efficiently and for far less. And as a welcome bonus the transformed external wall now gives the street a bright and fresh look.
